How to Charge a 36V/48V Battery Bank With a 12V Solar Panel?
To charge a 36V/48V battery bank using a 12V solar panel and either a PWM or MPPT charge controller, the solar panel's voltage should ideally be higher than 36V/48V. However, in certain situations where you only have a single 12V or 24V solar panel available to charge a 36V or 48V battery bank, such as in compact spaces like a golf cart, you can use the Renogy 10A Rover Boost charge controller. This controller is designed to boost the lower solar voltage to effectively charge a high-voltage battery bank.
Can I Use 2 x 100W Panels With This Controller?
Yes, you can use two 100W panels with this controller. The rated solar input for 36V batteries is 500W, and the solar input voltage should not exceed 25VDC. For 48V batteries, the rated solar input is 650W, and the solar input voltage should not exceed 40VDC. When connecting the panels, it's recommended to wire them in parallel.
What Is the Connection Order and Operations for My Solar System?
An off-grid solar system typically includes solar panels, a charge controller, batteries, an inverter, a Bluetooth module, and wiring. Here's the order of connections and operations:
- Connect the battery to the charge controller using tray cables.
- Then, connect your solar panels to the charge controller using adapter kits.
- After making these wiring connections, set your battery type using the SET button on the controller. The controller will take care of the rest. You can find the LED Indicators and SET buttons on the OUTPUT side of the Rover Boost.
